Updated: Aug 19

The Victorian government has released the report Transition Opportunities: Coal to Offshore Wind guide, which shows how workers in the coal power industry can retool and upskill to play an important role in the burgeoning offshore wind sector.

Though commissioned for Victorian workers at the Yallorn power station, Transition Opportunities is highly useful for similar coal industry workers in the Hunter region who are seeking comprehensive information on career transition pathways, as Hunter offshore wind industry gets closer to reality.

The workers guide highlights the similar skills and qualifications between industries and outlines the various opportunities available for current boilermakers, engineers, mechanical fitters, mobile plant operators, power workers, and unit controllers.

The Victorian government delivered the report in partnership with Energy Australia, TAFE Gippsland, Federation University, Atlas Professionals, and Southerly Ten as part of the government’s efforts to ensure a managed transition which include a $10 million worker support package.

“We’re taking workers with us through every step of the transition to net zero and these transferable skills and training opportunities are key to helping them prepare for the future,” Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D’Ambrosio said announcing the report.
