Survey shows strong Hunter support for renewables

Hunter region residents are supportive of renewable energy investment and believe the energy transition will be good for regional Australia, according to a new survey commissioned by Renew Australia for All.

The survey, conducted by research firm 89 Degrees East, found 71% of locals think Australia will benefit from shifting to renewable energy, and 73% agreed that renewables and batteries are the fastest way to lower people's power bills.

Hunter Workers Secretary Leigh Shears said that the polling demonstrates what Unions already know on the ground. “Our communities expect governments, state and federal, to get moving on the energy transition and secure these opportunities, ensuring that no one is left behind."

Mr Shears said Hunter workers are looking to the renewable energy transition as a vital economic opportunity for the region which is facing enormous industrial upheaval in coming years. Renewable energy projects, like Hunter Offshore Wind, could secure economic prosperity and supply the high-paid, quality jobs and opportunities these communities need to thrive.

“Our region has the potential to be the epicentre of renewable energy manufacturing and technology, driving investment in emerging industries and supply chains locally, nationally and abroad.”

A survey by ACM earlier this year indicated 70% of coastal-regional voters approve of proposed offshore wind infrastructure in their community. In contrast, 75% said they oppose nuclear infrastructure in their communities, indicating Opposition Leader Peter Dutton will struggle to find support for his aspirational plan to build nuclear power plants across Australia, including in the Hunter region.
